]]> He was once hailed a hero for chasing a man on foot who shot him in the face, but now he’s been charged with rape and sexual assault after he left a party with two women. Richard DeCoatsworth, a former Philadelphia Police officer was investigated by the Special Victims Unit for an incident which occurred last Thursday.

Two women reported that DeCoatsworth forced them at gunpoint to consumer drugs and engage in sexual activity. The women stated that they were at a party when they came into contact with DeCoatsworth. They ended up leaving the party with him. The location as to where DeCoatsworth took them is not beng disclosed due to an ongoing investigation.

At the second location, DeCoatsworth took out his weapon and forced the two women to consumer narcotics and perform sexual acts. They explained that DeCoatsworth kept them captive for two days. Authorities were able to obtain an arrest warrant and took him into custody from his Port Richmond home.

DeCoatsworth was arrested on Saturday and charged with rape, sexual assault, terroristic threats, and other related charges.

]]> For April Fools, Google put out a genius prank to mess with their millions of users. On Google searches, they included a link to Google Nose, supposedly a new program the company was trying that would create smells from your computer or mobile device, along with being able to sense the smells around you. As users tried many times to get Google Nose to work, eventually they would find themselves with an error which said “today is April Fools” usually making people laugh at the harmless prank the multi-billion company had just played on them; Nose was all fun and games.

A company in Japan, Chaku Perfume Co. Ldt. may actually have made what Google Nose was pretending to be. In a device they call ChatPerf, customers will be able to send scents along with any type of social messaging service they are using, such as a text or email. Instead of only sending a text based message, you can include a smell to help make your message truly unique. The ChatPerf looks similar to a flash drive, attaching to the headphone jack in mobile devices, currently the iPhone. The ChatPerf has an area on the device for installing “tanks” which are able to produce a different variety of smells. With different applications, the idea is that you can “record” your own smell and then, once the scent is sent, the recipient will be able to smell that exact same scent.

This idea will also go beyond just social networking. Chaku Perfume Co. Ldt. also is encouraging developers to create new applications as well as improving current apps to incorporate this idea of smell. For example, gaming applications could become more realistic with actual smells from the setting of the game. The example that Chaku has used is a shooting game where every shot fired is accompanied by the smell of gun powder. This would make mobile gaming completely different that it ever has before.
According to sources, the ChatPerf itself is expected to be priced at around $50 while the cost of the tanks is unknown. Chaku has made their release date for the ChatPerf in September, making the device that is currently a concept a reality. How well the device work will be seen in the future, but the possibility of this innovative add-on is really spectacular. The technology world has never seen much like it, making it all the more exciting.

]]> When you are having a lazy night in with your favorite movie and a box of pizza, you know it’s a good night. But what happens if you DVD smells like a freshly baked pizza? Thats what Domino’s Pizza in Brazil did as a marketing campaign!

Domino’s partnered up with several rental stores in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, where they marked about ten discs in each store with thermal ink and flavored varnish – both of those are sensitive to heat. While movie renters were watching their movies, the DVD player affected the disc. When the movie was finished they were presented with a mini pizza that looked and smelled like a real one! One the pie it read, “Did you enjoy the movie? The next one will be even better with a hot and delicious Dominos’ Pizza.” Now isn’t that creative!

However, because more movies are being streamed through online servers, such an idea may be a bit anachronistic. Although in areas such as Brazil services like Netflix and iTunes are still relatively new. Broadband connections in Brazil are also not as fast as those in the U.S., so carrying video rental stores is still crucial.

]]> It’s extremely scary to think that only two of 13 small SUVs performed well in a front-end crash test. The test was performed by an insurance industry group.

The Subaru 2014 Forester was the vehicle to score the best results. the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sports was rated as “acceptable.” However, the vehicles which have been selling the best such as For Escape, Honda CR-V and Jeep Wrangler have received some of the lowest ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The new Ford Escape has been the top-selling SUV so far this year, but the car it scored an overall “poor” rating. The Honda CR-V on the other hand received a “marginal” rating, it is the No. 2 top-selling vehicle. Other vehicles to score “poorly” ratings were Jeep Patriot, Buick Encore, Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tuscson.

Most of the tested cars were wither a 2012 or a 2013 model. The tests done by IIHS has a large impact on consumer buying decisions because people are concerned with their safety. These tests can impact the way families purchase new vehicles.

]]> According to new data released by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, two Philadelphia jails have the highest rates of inmates who have been sexually assaulted while incarcerated.

The Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center has been noted as one of the facilities. It was reported that the facilities holds the largest amount of inmates who have been sexually assaulted by jail staff. Riverside Correctional Facility is an all female prison, and is one of the institutions which has the highest rates of inmate-on-inmate sexual victimization.

At Riverside, more than 6.6 percent of inmates reported being victims of sexual assault and more than 6.3 percent of PICC inmates reported being victims of sexually assaulted by staff member. It was reported by the BJS that these are the second-and fourth-highest in the whole country.

PICC is currently installing more video cameras in their facility in order to prevent such measures. However, the prison system investigates and reports any complains of assault.

The breakfast menu includes things like grits; bacon, sausage or chicken breakfast wraps; a country fried steak biscuit, and so more!

The items will only be available on May 16th and 17th from 6:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. The chain currently does not offer diners breakfast, except for a limited amount of airport locations.

]]> More than 40 U.S. states have watched unemployment rates drop in the last month. This is the most that we have seen them fall since November. This drop in unemployment allows us to vividly see the job market improve in most areas around the country.

However, three states did see an increase in unemployment rates. The Labor Department stated that Louisiana, Tennessee and North Dakota only saw a rise. In addition, seven other states did not see a change in unemployment.

New York, California and South Carolina saw the largest decline in unemployment rates, where each state fell by 0.4 percentage points.

Nationwide, more than 165,000 jobs were added and unemployment fell by 7.5 percent. This is the lowest it has fallen in four years.

]]> It seems as though the third time was a charm for ‘American Idol’ winner, Candice Glover. The 23-year-old South Carolina native was first cut in Season 9′s Hollywood Week and Season 11′s Vegas Week. However, she was crowned the new “Idol” winner on Season 12′s finale.

Candice expressed her joy through weeping when Ryan Seacrest asked her how she felt. She was surrounded by her fellow contestants at the Los Angele’s Nokia Theater.

Though her journey was a little rough, she still knew her desired goal. Candice did not let her previous eliminations inflict on her performance and was determined to be the winner. This is what makes her so special and powerful. Many people would have gotten discouraged, but it only made her work harder.

Candice is the first female “Idol” winner since Season 6.

Joining them will be more than 50,000 area residents and guests.

The Spring Festival will close Broad Street to 19th Street from noon until 5 p.m. Guests can come out and enjoy featured food, fashion, entertainment and activities for the kids!

This year Dunkin’ Donuts will be giving away free iced coffee.
Beneficial Bank will be handing out free pretzels.
Kids can enjoy crafting and fun activities on 18th St between Walnut and Sansom.
