Drexel University has announced its interest in purchasing the recently closed University City High School.
The school has been looking into expanding its Powel Elementary school after it was awarded a grant to plan an expansion from the Philadelphia School Partnership, and they may have just found their location. According to the partnership executive director, Mark Gleason, Drexel has plans of building to new facilities including a facility for grades k-8 and then one for grades 6-8 at the University City school site.
While the mayor and city council debate over selling school buildings to come up with money to fill in a massive deficit in the system, officials say University City high school could bring in $23 million for the city.
