The upcoming issue of People Magazine, due out July 15th, asks its cover star, Matthew Perry, about the difficult time he had as an addict. Despite immense success as Chandler Bing on “Friends,” Perry was unable to help his alcohol and prescription drug problem. “I had a big problem with alcohol and pills and I couldn’t stop,” he tells PEOPLE in an exclusive new cover story. “Eventually things got so bad that I couldn’t hide it, and then everybody knew.”
And, it wasn’t a particular someone or something that got Perry back on the right track. “Something just clicked,” he explains. “You have to want the help.” And now, the “Go On” star is attempting to help those struggling addicts for whom it has also “clicked” to want help. He’s turned his former Malibu beach home into a men’s sober living facility, aptly called “Perry House.” What’s more, the actor is also a proactive advocate for drug courts, through which non-violent substance abusers receive treatment instead of incarceration for their drug offenses.
“The interesting reason that I can be so helpful to people now is that I screwed up so often,” Perry says. “It’s nice for people to see that somebody who once struggled in their life is not struggling any more.”
