When having a TSA agent wave a metal-detector wand in front of you, one may think that only the amount of coins in their pocket is able to be reported. Well they are wrong. A new study conducted at the University of Washington’s Applied Physics Laboratory in Seattle, shows that medal detectors can report how much cash one is carrying on them. Metal Detectors receive signals from the magnetic ink on each bill, when there are more bills stacked together the strength of the signal becomes greater. Though the exact amount of cash can not be reported just yet. If someone is carrying $100 all in ones they will get the same magnetic response as one carrying $1,000 in $100 bills. Of course other sources may impact the signal and signal strength.

$1000 in $100?
